As well as looking after your teeth it is important to look after your gums to ensure your whole mouth is healthy and that your teeth have a good foundation which prevents tooth sensitivity and discomfort.
Bleeding or swollen gums indicate that your gums are not in good health and could be infected. Left untreated this can lead to more serious problems with your gums, teeth and jaw bone.
As well as brushing and flossing properly at home and undertaking regular dental checkups we also recommend booking regular appointments with our dental hygienist for specialist cleaning.
Fillings are used to repair damage to a tooth caused by decay or trauma. Traditional fillings were made from silver amalgam but today most fillings are tooth coloured and are made from glass ionomer, composite resin or porcelain.
When done properly modern glass ionomer and composite resin fillings can often last as long as a silver amalgam filling would do and they look nicer in the mouth.
For areas that need greater strength porcelain is a better choice. Penrose Dental is one the few dental practices in New Zealand that offers CEREC restorations. These are fillings made from solid blocks of porcelain which are very durable and help to protect the remaining tooth structure.
If you have severe toothache or gum pain then your tooth might be very decayed and need a root canal. This procedure is performed when a tooth is decayed and the blood supply (the pulp) or the nerve is too damaged to recover. A root canal is an alternative to removing the tooth altogether.
Usually, a root canal and crown treatment takes two appointments. At the first the infected pulp is removed and the root is cleaned and shaped and filled temporarily to allow the tissue surrounding the tooth to heal.
Then at the second appointment, the tooth is checked to make sure the infection has gone and then the tooth will be restored with a dental crown. If the infection is severe more appointments may be needed to clear it out.
A dental emergency can be a worrying time, especially as it is often accompanied by pain. Our team offers prompt care for emergency patients, If you have any of the following please contact us as soon as possible and we'll find you an appointment.
Trauma is one of the most common reasons you will need emergency dental care. If your tooth has come out but you still have it, try and keep hold of it until you can get to the dentist. If you can safely put it back in the socket do so. If not you can keep it in a container with milk or your saliva. Remember that your mouth tends to bleed a lot so just because there is a lot of blood, it does not always mean the wound is serious.
