If you have serious issues with tooth decay or gaps where you have lost teeth, bridges and crowns are good solutions and an alternative to dental implants.
Crowns are usually made from porcelain and cover the whole chewing surface of a tooth. They are much larger than fillings. Crowns are used when a tooth has decayed so much or been filled so many times already that the structure has deteriorated too much for another filling and is at risk of further damage. A crown fully protects the remaining natural tooth from cracking or breaking.
Bridges are used to fill in areas where teeth are missing - often when there are multiple teeth missing. As well as making your smile look better, bridges can also help with your tooth and gum health. Teeth next to gaps can be prone to leaning which can change your bite and make it more difficult to eat. It can also lead to spaces where bacteria and plaque can accumulate leading to decay or gum disease. A bridge is made by creating a crown or number of crowns which is then suspended over the gum and held in place by the neighbouring natural teeth. Bridges are usually made from porcelain.
Penrose Dental offers both crowns and bridges as part of your dental treatment plan alongside high-quality white fillings. We may also recommend crowns as part of cosmetic dental work to improve the look of your teeth.
At Penrose Dental, we use CEREC CAD CAM technology to create crowns for our patients.
Usually a crown requires several appointments with a temporary crown worn in between. Using this technology allows us to create and place your new permanent crown all at one appointment.
Crowns made using this process are also highly accurate giving a better fit in your mouth and a more comfortable result.
If you need a crown, discuss this option and the costs with Chris during your consultation.
